What Is A Curse?

During the summer my husband and my eldest son had their bikes stolen from them. They were not thrown off the bikes or held up at gun point. The bikes were stolen from our locked backyard. The thief or thieves climbed over our high fence and hoisted the bikes over. They made off with the goods unbeknownst to us.

We're not even sure when exactly they stole the bikes, but we were furious that they did. Things like this test your Christianity. Do you curse? Yell? Desire to take revenge? Break knee caps? Bash in heads? Or just let it go? We decided as a family to try and let it go. We prayed over the lost bikes and for the person(s) that stole them.

I must confess that it was hard for me to let the matter go at that. I decided to curse them. Not the way you may think but nonetheless I did curse them. I prayed, "Lord I pray that whomever took the bikes will not have one night of peaceful sleep. I pray that guilt and discomfort will follow them and that whatever they do will not turn out the way they plan. I pray that they will be tormented by the evil one until they confess what they have done to You. I hope that they will be driven by these things to Your throne of grace. I pray that they will confess and ask for Your forgiveness and that they will know that I have forgiven them as well."

Yes, I sure did curse them. I know you think I shouldn't have done that. You feel that it is not biblical. But isn't it? Joshua did it in Joshua 6. Granted it was geared toward the person who rebuilt Jericho. But it was a curse nonetheless. I did not curse their first born or their youngest. I want them to be given over as Paul would say so that they can be saved. If after all that they experience they are not lead to God then it was pointless for the bikes to be stolen. But if through the loss of the bikes someone can be won to the kingdom all is worth it. I do not know if the person(s) was a seasoned criminal or a newbie at stealing, but God does. Whatever their status, my prayer is that their path will lead them to God.

Since August 2006, my husband and son have received new bikes. I wanted them to be able to enjoy their bonding time and exercise time without the memory of the stolen bikes. They are looking forward to next summer and so am I for I believe that this incident has changed not only the criminals life but ours as well.

    Hi Michelle
Yes when my kids where younger a we had all threeebikes stolen form our yard which was not fenced and the bikes where not locked up. I never could afford more bikes for them. It was a lesson on locking up the bikes to the deck railing for all of us .
